"Ventilation" video coming soon...

In the month of November, we started filming for Paten Locke's "Ventilation" music video. It was directed by JeromeD ( who also directed videos for Blu&Exile, Diz Gibran and Dom Kennedy. Additional effects were done by Sei and Kazuyo, who did visual effects for Michael Jackson's comeback tour in London, but unfortunately he passed before the performance took place. Footage of the effects were used and can be seen in the film "This Is It."

The official video is set to be released at the end of February, with the 12-inch to follow in March.

Here's a little teaser for the video:

Chikaramanga's new 7"

In November, I dropped my first solo 7-inch with Big Tone, which is part of the 7-inch series that I am putting out. This week, the 2nd installment was released, and this time it features LA emcee, Droop Capone. Droop has previously released a few projects, one of which was his Deep Impact EP(1999), which was produced by Thes One of People Under the Stairs. The 7-inch track is titled "A Life Like This," and the B side contains the instrumental. It is in stores now and is also available at the TRES eBay store. You can listen to the song at TRES myspace page.

DJ Sarasa

My friend, Sarasa recently put out a compilation album, "HIP HOP is FUNK & JAZZ". It is exclusively available on iTunes Japan. Tracks from DJ Alibi, Giant Panda, and People Under The Stairs are on it. All the songs on this album are from P-Vine's catalog. P-Vine is the distributor / label, which represents Tres in Japan. Vol. 2 and 3 of this compilation will be out in March and June.

I met Sarasa when she was in LA last October. I went to a couple of her DJ gigs in LA. She is a great DJ. She played some hard Hip Hop stuff not many DJs (especially female DJs) play. Check out her web site for more info. It is in both Japanese and English.

Shibuya Feb. 2 featuring HVW8

As you may already know, every first Tuesday of the month we throw Shibuya, and each one features new special guest DJ’s.

The next Shibuya (February 2nd) will feature Ty G and Max of HVW8.

HVW8 does a lot of great projects with different artists, musicians, companies, etc. They have recently worked with legendary skateboarder Ed Templeton, and feature a lot of different artists at their store front off of Melrose. Being a full service creative agency, HVW8 also has worked with Adidas for numerous projects, as well as Pepsi, Nike, Complex Magazine, Wax Poetics and many more. Back in November, Paten Locke was able to spin at their store for the live podcasts that they put out. 4 months later, we link again and feature them at our monthly event Shibuya.

So come out, support, and show some love.

(Here’s more info about them taken from their site)
“For more than ten years, HVW8 Production House has blurred the lines between art, music and design.
Established in 1998 in Montreal, Canada, HVW8 Production House’s initial artistic endeavor was the HVW8 Art Installation with artists Tyler Gibney, Gene Pendon and Dan Buller. After the group’s first “live painting” performance series at the Montreal Jazzfest, HVW8 started touring the world creating live pieces along side musicians such as the Herbalizer, Roots Manuva and Africa Bambaata, while holding exhibitions at such esteemed galleries as Parco in Tokyo, Museo De Arte De Puerto Rico in San Juan and MOCCA (Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art). HVW8 then created the acclaimed installation series “Political Minded” in 2004, which showcased in pop-up galleries in NYC, Montreal, L.A. and San Francisco.
In 2005, The HVW8 Art + Design gallery was established in Los Angeles as a studio + gallery space for HVW8 and friends. The current mandate is to support avant-garde graphic design, such as Dutch designer/illustrator Parra, Swedish design house SSON, skateboard company enjoi and American designer’s Brent Rollins, Kevin Lyons and Ray Noland. Most recently, HVW8 Records was founded in 2008. Look out for upcoming releases by Red “the Man Without the Machine,” Master Blazter feat. Computer Jay, J-1 and Dam-Funk and Hawthorne Headhunters with Black Spade/Stoney Rock.”

Simpsons x PUTS

I got an email from Thes One (of People Under The Stairs) this morning. He told me PUTS will be on the Simpsons this Sunday.
Here is what Thes said in his email.

As unbelievable as it is for me to type, Mike and myself will be on the Simpsons this Sunday on FOX. And not any Simpsons episode, but the 20 year 450th episode hour long special directed by acclaimed director Morgan Spurlock. A handful of musicians who the cast, crew and I’m sure the esteemed Mr. Groening respect were asked to reinterpret the classic Danny Elfman/Alf Clausen orchestra composition that has become as much apart of American culture as our national anthem. We flew to New York and recorded our portion with the amazing Andrew W.K. In Manhattan right before we left for our Africa Tour. From what I understand, portions of the song were also recorded by the Harlem Gospel Choir, Moby and Phish. We are in pretty high company. To what extent we will be featured on the show I am not sure, but we made the final edit and have signed our releases, so don’t blink or you might miss us (though I haven’t seen it yet). For our part, we cut the Simpsons theme on vinyl (with the help of Pete Lyman) and I made a custom Homer label for the two existing copies of the record, and then Double K cut it up on camera with myself on the drum machine, while Andrew W.K. Played the piano.

Tune in Sunday at 8:30 immediately following the 450th episode for the special and watch for your boys!

Here’s a link to one of the various Press Releases floating around if you want to read more:

This is incredible.
I will definitely watch it.

ESQ & Chikaramanga

I am working on a project with a MC, ESQ. He is originally from Chicago and has lived in LA for about two years. He is a good friend of Paten Locke. When Paten was in LA in November, I met him through Paten and found out he lived only a few blocks away from my apartment. Since I liked his CD he gave me and he liked my beats, we decided to do some tracks together. As of today, we have about 16 songs recorded. 16 songs within two month... It's really fast. The recording process has been very fast and very fun. It really reminded me how fun making music was. We will make 5 or 6 more songs and see what happens.
Yesterday, ESQ's friend, Kieth and Fire came to my place with ESQ. Kieth is a DJ / record collector and Fire is a great Reggae singer. We recorded a track ESQ did with Fire yesterday. These are some of the photos from yesterday's session. The song came out really nice!
