Paten Locke / Break Thru 12" coming soon!!!

Just picked up Paten's 12" from the pressing plant. It came out great.
Big shout out to Gordon from HHV!!! Thank you for the great art work!
This 12" contains three brand new tracks from Paten. All three songs are uploaded in the music payler at TRES Myspace page. The release date of this 12" is June 30th. The release date on iTunes is July 7th. We changed the design for the 12" label. This title is the first one with the new design.

When I picked up the records, I noticed that the pressing plant did not seem busy. Their shipping department was empty. They have always been busy and our order never have been completed as it was scheduled. For past few titles, our order was completed on time. I guess not many people are making vinyl or CDs.

HVW8 art gallery

Yesterday, I went to HVW8 (pronounced Heavy Weight) art gallery. HVW8 is a group of artists and musicians based in LA. They have a gallery on Melrose and represent Parra in West Coast. They had Parra's art show at their gallery in May. When I went there, they still had some Parra's artwork hung on the wall. I am a big fan of his artwork.
My friend, Max is a part of HVW8 crew. I stopped by at the gallery to say what's up to him. I also brought some promos for him. He gave me a T-shirt!
On second and forth Sunday, they have DJs or musicians play music and have BBQ at the gallery. They record the session and put up on their podcast.
I will definitely come to the next BBQ & Podcast session. The next one is this coming Sunday, 6/28.

Mastering for Paten Locke "Super Ramen Rocketship"

I went to the mastering studio to pick up the master for Paten's album this morning. I am writing this blog at TRES office as I am uploading the master for Paten. I have not had a chance to listen to the master yet. The engineer told me it was easy to work with since the whole album was mixed very well. That is a good sign. I am looking forward to listening to it at my studio.
We usually do mastering at Better Quality Sound in Los Angeles. BQS is run by a very experienced mastering and cutting engineer, David Cheppa. A lot of artists from LA has worked with him. I know Kut Master Kurt and Miles from Breakestra often work with Mr. Cheppa. He is an interesting character. Probably, a lot of people who have worked with him has some interesting stories about him. I have a couple of stores, which I should not write here.

Red Bull "The Business of Music" forum

My friend, Inka sent me the info about this forum. He helps promoting the events Red Bull Music Academy throws. This forum took place in Irvine yesterday. Since I wanted to know what Red Bull Music Academy does, I decided to attend.
The forum was going to start at 7pm. I left the office at 5:30pm. I thought it would take at least hour and half to get there, but the traffic wasn't too bad. I got there around 6:30pm. Because there was a Red Bull custom mini in front of the venue, it was easy to find it.
One drink ticket was provided to all attendants and there was free food, which was really good. I regret I had 3 hamburgers at McDonald's before I left LA. I still ate a lot of those free food though.
The forum began with Om'Mas's (of Sa-Ra) interview. He talked about how he got into this industry and how he met Taz and Shafiq (they were also there). He didn't mention anything about Kanye and G.O.O.D. music label. Weren't they supposed to have an album with G.O.O.D.?
After Om'Mas talked about 45 minutes, Ras MG (Sublime), Nate (Stones Throw Records), Dam Funk, DJ Truly Odd, Taz (Sa-Ra), and Shafiq (Sa-Ra) joined and each of them explained how the recent change in the music industry affected them and how they adjusted themselves. Then, Q&A time. There probably were many musicians in the crowd. There was an interesting discussion between the panelists and crowd. I wanted to ask what happen to their deal with Kanye, but I didn't. I'm glad I didn't ask. Overall, the forum was very interesting and encouraging. For more info about Red Bull Music Academy, visit their web site. They were videotaping the entire forum. I assume it will be uploaded at their site soon.

I went to Beat Swap Meet last Sunday.
It takes place in China Town in LA once in every three month. I usually DJ at this event.
After I span for 30 minutes, I went through 45 bins a few vendors had. I bough six 45s this time. I usually bring my portable record player when I go out to buy records, but I forgot to bring it. Considering that I did not listen to any of the records before I bought it, I did OK. A couple of Soul and Funk 45s I bought were pretty good. One of the Funk (supposed to be Funk) 45s was not good at all. Oh well, it happens.
Next Beat Swap Meet is in September. If you are in LA, come to check it out.

CHIKARAMANGA feat. Droop Capone

Have you heard Droop Capone's 12 inch "Deep Impact"? It came out in 1999. All 4 songs on this 12" were produced by Thes One (of People Under The Stairs). I bought this 12" at Fat Beats LA when they were still at Vermont Ave location. I didn't know Droop, Thes, or People Under The Stairs at that time. I bought it just because the label design was CTI Records's design. Since I bought it, the record has always been in my record bag when I DJ. Maybe not always, but most of the times. Ever since I heard the song, "Deep Impact", I've wanted to do a track with him. Today, it came true.
I gave him my beat CD a couple of month ago hoping he could do a track for my project. He rapped on one of the beats and today, I got his vocal parts from him. The song came out very nice. I am looking forward to mixing it. This song is going to be one of my 7 inch series.

IPJ (iPhone Jockey)

Today, I had a meeting with people from New Forestar, which is a company who created a DJ application for iPhone. The application is called IPJ (iPhone / iPodTouch Jockey). This application is amazing. You can cue up the song with the touch screen, change the BPM, put effects, etc. There is a demo on YouTube. In this demo, the DJ (PJ?) is not really mixing, but you can definitely do it. It will be great to bring this to BBQ. They are developing hardware for IPJ to connect to iPhone, such as a turntable for cuing up, mixer, and speakers. They are also developing an application by which you can make beats on iPhone. We will probably do some collaboration projects with them. It will be interesting.

Live at the Korean BBQ

I met up with Blu's manager, Jon for dinner this evening. Since our office is located in Korea town, there is a lot of Korean restaurant near our office. We decided to go to Tofu House to get some Korean BBQ and sundubu. I brought some copies of new Johnson & Jonson 12" for Blu.
Jon is a busy guy. In addition to managing Blu, he does press for several labels. Now, he is working on 5 different titles. Ubiquity recently asked him to support the press campaign for new Sa-Ra's album.
According to Jon, Blu is working on his new album to be released from Warner. He told me there will be a lot of live elements on the album. I am looking forward to Blu's new music!

Ohmega Watts at SHIBUYA

Ohmega Watts from Lightheaded came to the office on Tuesday.
He let me hear some of the beats for Lightheaded's next album.
All the stuff he let me hear was amazing. It's going to be a great album.
Hopefully, they can finish recording and mixing by the end of September so that we can release it in Jan/Feb 2010.
After we had late lunch / early dinner at Denny's by the office, we went to the venue for our monthly event in Little Tokyo. We got there little passed 7pm and quickly set everything up. DJ Yotah started the night. After Yotah, Omae span and then I went on. I usually spin mix of soul, funk, Hip Hop, disco, and sometimes reggae, but I only brought recent Hip Hop 12"s that night. No particular reasons. I just wanted to do something different from what I usually do. I think it was ok. I need to practice. After me, Ohmega went on. Since he got a lot of records from us, Ubiquity, and Stones Throw, he did free style set with those promos he got and records he had. It was a great set. I need to get the new Sa-Ra stuff he played.
Big shout out to Max from HVW8 and Mainframe from Johnson & Jonson. Thanks for stopping by!

update : 6/1/2009

I don't really feel like it is Monday since I had to come to the office on Saturday and Sunday. If there are things need to be taken care of, I come to the office even on the weekends. Unfortunately, that's how a small label operates.
On Saturday, my friend, Kei from Ubiquity came to our office to give me a quick lesson on Illustrator and Photoshop. It was very helpful. Now, I can make info sheet for a new release and simple web banner. Thanks, Kei!
On Sunday, I wanted to go to Do-Over for my first time this year, but couldn't make it. Ohmega Watts from Lightheaded just sent me an email and told me he DJed there. If he told me he would be spinning, I would have gone. Oh, well. Next time. Ohmega might be able to come to our monthly event, SHIBUYA to play some records. It is tomorrow, Tuesday 6/2. If you are in LA area come to check out. I will be DJing, too. Here is the info.
