This is Chikara from Tres.
2009 was very productive year for us. I would like to thank all artists we worked with in 2009. We released two full length titles, Big Tone / The Art Of Ink and Paten Locke / Super Ramen Rocketship in addition to several 12" and 7" titles in 2009. All the titles we released this year have been successful. Also, I would like to thank everyone who has supported our label. It is such a tough time for a small label like us. Hearing a great feedback about the music we put out has really motivated us to keep going. I wish 2010 will be a great year for all of us!

We have a lot of great stuff planed for 2010. We are going to release full length titles by Shawn Jackson, Co$$, and Lightheaded. All of these titles will be released on CD, vinyl, and digital. Don't worry! We will keep releasing vinyl! Also, more titles from my 7" series and our 6 year anniversary mixtape by DJ Lowkey will be released.

I will keep you updated about our new releases here.

Have great new year holidays!

New Track From Co$$

Co$$ has recently released a track titled, "No Allah." It's been featured on a few blogs, one of which being, and has generated quite a bit of commotion amongst the site goers.

Here's the link:

Here are a few words Co$$ had to say regarding the subject matter:

"No Allah is no way is my proclamation that God does not exist, nor do I mean any disrespect to Muslims or any systems of belief, the song is really about good not being able to thrive where evil is uplifted….If you listen closely the lyrics are more about hypocrisy than Atheism….Thanx to all who take the time to listen to the music and analyze the lyricism before they jump to conclusions." -Co$$

You can expect a full length album from Co$$ to hit the stores soon.

Paten Locke & DJ Lowkey Photo Shoot

I asked Omae who does Shibuya night with me to shoot some photos of Paten and DJ Lowkey. Lowkey is a DJ based out of LA. I asked him to make an official TRES Mix CD. He finished it a few weeks ago. It came out great. We will put it out on CD in February.

Here is more info about Lowkey.

Lowkey is a DJ all about the roots. Born in Nyack, NY, and now residing in Huntington Beach, CA, DJ Lowkey takes his knowledge of the East Coast Hip Hop scene, and blends it with his feel for the West. His exposure to the Hip Hop genre began in the early 90’s, which manifested into a love for DJing. By 1998 he had saved up enough cash for some turntables, and shortly after that, he began working for Fat Beats LA in 2001. Incorporating styles such as trick mixing, doubles, and blending into his sets, it only makes sense that a lot of his inspirations came from the Beat Junkies, Rob Swift, Paul Nice, and Kenny Dope. Not forgetting about his early childhood memories of Motown and Classic Rock records, Lowkey also dug heavily into the funk/soul, jazz and rock side of DJing as well.

By collecting records since his very beginnings, Lowkey has been able to create a wide sound, yet definitive. While still representing Fat Beats LA, Lowkey can be found DJing at in-store events at Fat Beats and at different venues throughout Southern California. His dedication to the art form has also lead him to performing at various LRG sponsored events and sharing the stage with Wu-Tang Clan’s very own, GZA. Lowkey may have moved away from the East Coast, but he never forgets where he’s from because he takes it back to the roots. As they say, “You gotta know where you’ve been, to know where you’re going.”

We needed Lowkey's photos for the artwork and press. Paten already had some press photos, but it's just better to have more photos. We went to record pressing plant, Fat Beats store, and LACMA to shoot photos. I haven't seen all the photos yet, but the ones I saw on the camera looked great. Thank you, Omae san!

Real Ramen For Real People

I picked up Paten Locke from LAX at 9pm last night. A radio show at KUCI in Irvine, Open Session invited Paten and I to their show on that day. The show was from 10pm to midnight. We stopped by at a ramen spot in Torrance on the way from the airport to KUCI. This restaurant is called Asa Ramen. It is probably my favorite ramen spot in LA. Since Paten's album is called "Super Ramen Rocketship", I thought it would be the perfect option for the first meal for his trip to LA. The ramen was really good as usual.

We arrived at KUCI around 11pm. The host of the show, JRA introduced Paten and played a couple of tracks off of his album. After 10 minutes of Paten's interview, I joined them and introduced my 7" project. I had test pressings for the first two 7"s with me. I asked JRA to play them. The first one is a song called "Cool" featuring Big Tone. The second one is "A Life Like This" featuring Droop-Capone. "Cool" 7 inch will be out soon. I will put up the track on our myspace page this week. "A Life Like This" 7 inch is scheduled to be released in Janurary.
Before the show ended, Paten did "Soup For One" and "Break Thru" live. It was great.
The entire show was recorded and they will send me the link to the MP3. I will post it here as soon as I receive it.

Paten and I will be DJing at Shibuya in down town LA tonight. The info is in the blog post I posted yesterday.

Y Society "Travel At Your Own Pace - Instrumentals"

We are releasing Y Society "Travel At Your Own Pace - Instrumentals" on November 17th. Tres is releasing it digitally and Damu and his partner, John Notarfrancesco's label, Redefinition Records is releasing it on CD and vinyl.
A lot of people has been asking me about this. Finally, it's coming out.

Y Society debut album, Travel At Your Own Pace, came out in 2007 and was well received by critics and fans alike. Infusing elements of the past with the promising sound of the future the overall message of the album is to simply listen to it, and take from it what you will. Tracks such as “Never Off” and “Puzzles” are easily recognized as trademarks of two passionate hip-hoppers with intuitive rhymes over instrumentals that leave you feigning for more. Damu the Fudgmunk, a Washington DC native, made his initial mark on Hip Hop as the DJ for Panacea who broke in 2006, and plays the role of DJ/Producer in Y Society, while Insight covers the MC Duties. Their goal is to make us all consciously aware and proud all over again of Hip Hop music. Tres Records is proud to present the Travel at Your Own Pace instrumentals, coming out on November 17th, 2009.

“Veryrefreshing to hear a young cat with that much soul. Exactly what’s been missing from the game….soul.”

-Marley Marl

“Hip-hop that challenges the genre’s norms and expectations.”

“Damu [speaks] with his hands in a musical communication technique mastered by very few in Hip Hop today.”

Track Listing:
1. This is an Introduction - Instrumental
2. Never Off (On & On) - Instrumental
3. Hole in your pocket - Instrumental
4. This Advice - Instrumental
5. Good Communication - Instrumental
6. Scientist - Instrumental
7. Dizzy - Instrumental
8. How Many of Us? - Instrumental
9. Puzzles - Instrumental
10. What’s Next? - Instrumental

LA based label, Dub Lab had their 10 year anniversary party / art show in Down Town LA. I went there with Omae. A lot of LP covers and slipmats were exhibited at the gallery. Those were made by Artists who were close to Dub Lab. The concept of the art show was "infinity". It was very cool. Also, Hit & Run T shirt crew were there with a silk screen equipment. They were printing Dub Lab design T shirts there and giving it away for free. I got one, too.

I met Overton Loyd through Omae at the art show. Overton is a designer who has worked with George Clinton for a long time. He did some of Parliament's album cover such as "Motor Booty Affair". He also did some of Digital Underground artwork.
After the art show, Overton invited us to his studio, which was only a couple of blocks away from the art gallery. He showed me his sketch books which he kept from 70s. There was a lot of rough sketches of the characters, which I have seen on Parliament and Funkadelic' art work. We hang out drinking wine and seeing his art until very late night. He showed me a lot of design he did and told me stories. I had such a great time.

It will be cool, if he can make a design for TRES T shirt.
